Sclerotherapy
Sclerotherapy is widely used and a highly effective medical procedure used to eliminate varicose veins (from legs) and spider veins. During a sclerotherapy procedure, Dr. Merkel will inject your varicose veins with a liquid agent that closes the veins. The veins should fade away in a few weeks. You won’t need anesthesia and this can be performed in our office.
Laser Therapy
During laser therapy, we will use a laser on the surface of the skin to destroy the (micro)varicose veins with heat. The heat causes beneficial scar tissue to form, which then closes off the vein. You may need more than one treatment to fully eliminate the vein.
Laser Ablation
Laser ablation is a great non-surgical option that has shown to be equally effective as compared to surgical removal with much less downtime. A tiny laser fiber is placed inside the vein and then the laser delivers light that causes the vein to collapse. This heat closes the vein so blood cannot flow the wrong direction anymore; leading to a “disappearance” of the varicose vein. Laser ablation is often accompanied by chemical ablation (sclerotherapy) for maximum effect of closing down abnormal veins. This procedure is most often performed with local anesthesia combined with IV sedation.
