CANCERS and PRE-CANCERS

Skin care, cancer screening, pre-cancer and cancer treatment

Up to 90% of all skin cancers are caused by exposure to the sun's harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays. Fortunately, most skin cancers are visible and can be diagnosed early and successfully treated before they can spread to other parts of the body. Many lesions can be detected and treated at a precancerous stage - the point at which their cells may be close to turning cancerous but have not yet.

Actinic keratosis (AK) is the most common type of precancerous skin lesion. An AK is evidence that sun damage has occurred and means you are therefore at greater risk of developing skin cancer. The more AKs that are untreated, and the older these lesions are, the greater the chance that one or more may turn into squamous cell carcinoma, a common form of skin cancer.

Levulan Kerastick® "Photo Dynamic Therapy" (PDT) is an excellent treatment for AKs.

Levulan is applied to the AK. Afterwards, the skin is exposed to a Blue light or an IPL Laser (Intense Pulsed Light). A reaction occurs which helps destroy the AK. There is an excellent cosmetic response with no scarring reported.

Frequent Skin Examinations

Remember: frequent skin examinations are the key to early detection and prevention of skin cancers. Our staff at The Medical Spa are trained in how to spot precancerous and skin cancer lesions. They can then refer you to the appropriate medical provider for advice and/or treatment.
