Implants are used to augment breasts (make larger). After reviewing years of research concerning silicone-filled breast implants, the FDA  approved the use of the new silicone implant filled with "memory gel", also called "cohesive gel"  in breast augmentation. Dr. Merkel almost always uses this “next generation” of silicone implants that deliver a “natural feel” that closely resembles natural breast tissue and also offers unparalled safety, as the implant is very durable. He also offers a choice of “adjustable fill” saline implants, which can be adjusted after surgery to get just the right size for patients. Dr. Merkel will determine, with you, which implant will be the best choice for your augmentation. The "memory gel" are his prefrence. has a wealth of information concerning breast augmentation, including before and after photos. A woman’s breasts often change over time, losing their youthful shape and firmness. If you desire to restore the firmness and shape of your breasts, a breast lift (technically called a mastopexy) may be right for you. A breast lift is a highly individualized procedure that will be determined by Dr. Merkel based upon your breast size and shape, size and position of your areola, the degree of breast sagging and your skin quality and skin elasticity. A breast lift will rejuvenate your female form with a breast profile that is more youthful, uplifted and firm. The uplift can be combined with augmentation to obtain the best result from both procedures.

Women with large breasts experience more than dissatisfaction with body image – they experience physical pain and discomfort. If you have large breasts that limit your physical activity and cause pain, breast reduction may be right for you and can correct your pain problem overnight.

Breast reduction is a surgical procedure to reduce the size of large pendulous breasts. Technically called “reduction mammaplasty", breast reduction improves breast position and shape. Breast reduction can be performed unilaterally (on one breast) or bilaterally (on both breasts). It is generally considered a reconstructive procedure and may be covered by insurance when it is performed to relieve medical symptoms. Pre-certification is required for coverage.

A fit and well- proportioned body is often considered a symbol of health and vitality. But despite good health and a reasonable level of fitness, you may still have a body with disproportionate contours due to localized fat deposits. This may be due to heredity, hormone imbalance  or family traits rather than a lack of weight control or fitness. We can help you achieve your goal of a well-proportioned body, with body contouring.

If you are bothered by excess fat deposits, located anywhere on your face or body, that do not respond to diet or exercise, liposuction may be right for you. In general, liposuction slims and reshapes specific areas of the body by removing localized or regional excess fat deposits, improving your body contours and proportion and ultimately, enhancing your self-image. The most common areas are love handles (flanks), back rolls, abdomen, inside of the thighs, saddlebags, neck and arms.

Liposuction, also called lipoplasty or suction lipectomy, is the surgical removal of localized or regional excess fatty tissue. There are four common variations to the procedure.

  • Traditional liposuction, defined as surgical suctioning of excess fat deposits using Tumescent or super-wet technique, requires an infusion of saline solution, with added adrenaline and possibly anesthetic prior to removal of excess fat

  • Ultrasound-assisted lipoplasty (UAL), where ultrasonic energy is used to liquefy excess fat prior to surgical suction.

  • SmartLipoMPX Laser

  • Syringe powered lipo sculpture

Liposuction is a highly individualized procedure and requires careful consideration of your specific concerns and the areas you desire improvement. Dr. Merkel will evaluate your skin tone and elasticity, as well as fat density and distribution, and will determine which procedure – or combination of procedures – will help you achieve your goals.

This laser-assisted lipolysis procedure is a revolutionary, minimally invasive treatment that permanently destroys fat cells, improves overall body shape and actually results in tissue tightening. Perfect for those areas that do not respond to diet or exercise. Continued improvement can be seen in your body over 3 to 6 months after the procedure. SmartLipo®MPX is often used by Dr. Merkel alone or in combination with traditional liposuction.

A flat and well-toned abdomen is something you may strive for through exercise and weight control. Often these methods cannot achieve your goal. Even individuals of otherwise normal body weight and proportion can develop an abdomen that protrudes or is loose and sagging. Also known as abdominoplasty, a tummy tuck removes excess fat and skin, and in most cases restores weakened or separated muscles creating an abdominal profile that is smoother and firmer. You'll like looking in the mirror again!

A tummy tuck procedure is highly individualized and Dr. Merkel will consult with you regarding the best method of performing the procedure and talk with you about your goals and expectations. Although excess fat and skin are removed, a tummy tuck is not a substitute for weight loss or an appropriate weight loss program, but can help smooth and firm your abdomen and improve your self-confidence and body image.

ThermiTight™ is a minimally invasive alternative for skin tightening. It uses radio frequency to stimulate collagen production beneath the skin, which improves sagging and smooths out texture. ThermiTight™ is formally described as “thermistor-controlled subdermal skin tightening,”* which basically means that regulated heat is targeted at the collagen layer of the skin. To get under the skin, the ThermiRF™ system is used along with a tiny probe, called the SmartTip™ thermistor probe, which is inserted just below the surface. Doctor Merkel delivers radio frequency energy into the area through gentle movements, which heats the subdermal tissue to a specific internal temperature. He then uses the Thermal Image Guidance™ (see left) to monitor external temperatures and ensure the safety of the skin. Most procedures last last less than an hour, and are followed up with a gentle wrap. As for downtime post-ThermiTight treatment, you should be able to resume normal activities as early as the next day.
